EPIC, oceans, and art

Months ago, I was approached by the organizers of EPIC Vancouver – the Sustainable Living Expo to see if I would be interested in organizing ocean-related artwork to be displayed on the trade show floor. I said YES immediately. I’m a strong believer in the power of art in everyday places (I mean, that’s where people are): art is made to be visible, not just tucked away in studios and galleries.

Vicky Bowes: Surface

My job was made easier by the fact that I was already organizing an ocean-themed art exhibition for the International Marine Conservation Congress in Victoria. I invited the artists to participate in both, with a focus on large pieces to be shown at EPIC.

Leanne Hodges: Kelp Reef Playtime

I’m thrilled that four of us will have our work on display at EPIC: Vicky Bowes, Leanne Hodges, Cam MacDonald, and myself. The images in this post are a sneak peek at what will be on view!

Cam MacDonald's gigantic salmon

Robi Smith: Salmon Migration

My only sadness about EPIC is that it runs the same weekend as the Marine Conservation Congress, so I won’t be around to meet people and talk about the art in person at EPIC. (Next time!)

If you’re heading over to EPIC this weekend, be sure to check out the art and let me know what you think!

  1. Hi Robi,

I found your blog just by chance. I completely agree with you that art should be where everyone sees it on a daily basis, not just in museums and galleries. Best of luck to you as you organize your ocean-related show.

    Glad that I stopped by,

    • Hi Beth – Thanks for writing. Based on comments from the organizers, the art show at EPIC was very well received and something I’d love to do again 🙂 I think there are many opportunities for putting art in unconventional places – just takes keeping you’re eyes open!
